Engineering at the Limit

To explore the fundamental laws of the universe, CERN operates the world’s most complex scientific instruments. At the heart of our laboratory is the Large Hadron Collider, a 27-kilometer particle accelerator ring located 100 meters underground. To accelerate particles at nearly the speed of light, we operate the coldest cryogenic facility on Earth at -271.3°C, a temperature colder than outer space. This extreme environment allows us to generate and control high-energy beams that produce over 1 billion particle collisions per second. The resulting data, approximately 140 terabytes every day, is processed by our global computing network, pushing the boundaries of what is possible in many different fields of engineering.
